Code of Conduct

A code of conduct is based on the core values of Ubuntu African Society Bay of Plenty Incorporated and provides guidelines for:

• The public to access the minimum standards expected of Committee members, those involved in volunteering/ working for UAS BOP

• Committee members, those working/ volunteering with/for Ubuntu African Society Bay of Plenty Incorporated to monitor their own performance and that of their fellow members 

In meeting the values, vision and mission of Ubuntu African Society Incorporated, committee members, volunteers and workers, will:

1. Uphold a high standard of personal conduct and act with integrity by:
a. Ensuring services provided are based on good intent.
b. Acknowledging and resolving any form of conflict of interest that may arise.
c. No form of harassment or bullying will be accepted.
d. Endeavouring to have conflicts resolved in a way that maintains quality and integrity of the service.

2. Respect the rights of anyone involved with the society and their families, those who volunteer / work by acknowledging and allowing for individuality of people.

3. Interact with compassion by:
a. Communicating in a caring, kind and considerate manner, ensuring that information is only used for use of the society no information for those using the society services to be realised without the person consent.
b. Not to do any harm

4. Maintain commitment by refraining from any conduct that compromises the society or those to whom it offers a service.
a. Respecting the society status by making funding claims or remuneration only as and when appropriate for services rendered.

5.Demonstrate responsibility by actively utilising community resources to support activities for the society
a. Committee members, subcommittee members, volunteers, workers have a duty not to misuse power and information.
b. Duty to maintain, respect, integrity and confidentiality among the Team.

Ubuntu - I am because we are

Ubuntu evolved from Nguni and Bantu languages of Africa. which symbolises being human. The Zulu expression “Umuntu Ngumuntu Ngabantu” means that an individual becomes who they are because of their relationships with others. UbuntuTV has its roots in humanist African Philosophy. Which emphasises on the idea of community as a building blocks of society.

Red : 43 out of 54 African countries has red colour red symbolise blood shed by Africans who died for liberation and the shared blood of African people.

Green: Forty-two African flags include green, symbolizing growth, fertility, and resources. Africa provides 40% of the world’s natural resources.

Cycles: Uneven cycles highlight resource inequality among social groups in Africa.

White: represents peace within individuals and those around us.

The Fern represents the resilience and strength of African communities, as well as symbolizing new beginnings and growth in our new home New Zealand.

Constitution

1.Promote community development that strengthens the economy, social, psychological, spiritual, and physical stability of Africans in Bay of Plenty with the development of African led or collaborated events, programs, and initiatives.

2. Connect Africans in Bay of Plenty to their culture we aim to ensure a strong sense of identity that can be used to enrich African children, youth and adults’ personal self-esteem, resilience to racism, community engagement and to pass down to the next African New Zealanders generations as they learn to navigate what it means to be a person of proud African descent, living in New Zealand context and be good citizens.

3 . Establish & maintain an African initiative for African children, youth, and adults in Bay of Plenty and empower their sense of identity and belonging within their community and in the context of living in New Zealand.

4. Empower and encourage Africans in the Bay Plenty to embrace their unique qualities, culture, and how that is celebrated alongside other cultures within Bay of Plenty. Fostering and encouraging Africans in the Bay of Plenty to preserve their African languages, traditions, arts, history, cultures, and heritage.

5. Embrace Africans in the Bay of Plenty diverse cultural backgrounds, regardless of race, gender, religion and age, understanding that everyone is unique and should be celebrated for their individuality and their contribution to their African communities and New Zealand communities at large.

6. Liaise and participate as point of contact, arrange and coordinate meetings that enhance the well-being of Africans in the Bay of Plenty.

7. Encourage the full participation of Africans within the social, economic, local, and cultural life of Bay of Plenty.

8. Embrace Africans in the Bay Of Plenty diverse cultural backgrounds, regardless of race, gender, religion and age, understanding that everyone is unique and should be celebrated for their individuality and their contribution to their African communities and New Zealand at large.

9. Provide information and any support to new migrants Africans in the Bay Of Plenty where resources to do so are available.

10. Promote health relationships within the African Communities, other ethnic communities’ local iwis with the Bay of Plenty and around New Zealand.

11. Establish and build a vibrant African community and contribute to the cultural vibrancy of the Bay of Plenty region.
